Here are the Top 5 Gaming Laptops of 2016

Looking for a laptop that ensures quality performance in gaming and CPU/GPU intensive applications? You’ll need to be critical, thorough, and practical so we’re afraid it won’t be easy to scour the internet for the right one for you. Let us help you out!

There has been a wide variety of gaming laptops that have proven themselves this year, but only a few of them managed to get good reviews across the board. The following five laptops have consistently been well-reviewed by different tech advisors like PC Advisor, PC Magazine, CNet, Digital Trends, Tech Radar, and Laptop Mag.

Asus ROG G752

The Asus ROG G752 is a powerhouse of a laptop, featuring Intel core i7, an Nvidia GeForce GTX 970M – 980M graphics driver, 16GB to 64 GB of RAM, a 17.3-inch, full HD 1320 x 1080p IPS LCD screen, and a storage of 128GB – 512GB solid state drive alongside a 1TB hard drive.

The 4.4 kg beast also features an Intel Skylake, 2.6GHz quad-core i7 processor in its G752VT variety with 3GB of video memory. It’s also equipped with Nvidia G-Sync for a smoother, tear-free gameplay. This laptop obviously packs a punch, but with these specs, it’s no wonder that its battery life suffers, functioning more as a desktop alternative than a real laptop you can carry around. The Asus ROG G752 is comparable to a tank: it loses on the portable side, but totally delivers in performance.

It also trades in the traditional heat pipes for a vapor chamber cooling system. This system sports a larger chamber that acts as a reservoir for cooling the liquid passing through the heat pipes, making it more efficient in getting rid of excess heat. Less heat means higher performance levels for a longer amount of time without baking your unit.

It doesn’t skip on its audio system either. It delivers convincing surround sound, underscored by a sub-woofer at the bottom, giving you an immersive audio experience in-game.

Though the G752 suffers in portability and battery because of its size and features, the laptop performs so well that it makes up for these disadvantages. The Asus ROG G752 retails for $1650.

Razer Blade

This is the true MacBook Pro rival that gamers are looking for. Featuring a slick 2.6GHz Intel Core i7-6700HQ and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 970M (with 6GB video memory) graphics driver, it’s perhaps the best 14-inch screen gaming laptop of the year. With a 3200 x 1080p resolution display that also doubles as a quick and responsive touch screen, it features vibrant colors great for gaming and movies.

The Razer Blade combines performance with portability, keeping a light, easy-to-carry frame (at least, easier than most gaming laptops) and a decent battery life to match it. The battery can last 3 hours and 35 minutes while gaming or playing six hours of video non-stop. It does compromise a little in the graphics department compared with other units, but if you want you can add a Razer Core and a Titan X to boost its graphics capability. It comes as a relief then that the Razer Blade has pretty much improved its thermal design, allowing it to support an Nvidia GTX 970M graphics chip with double the amount of video memory, which is more than most of the competition. The screen churns out 57 frames per second in its original resolution.

The laptop introduces the Chroma Lighting System for PC keyboards to laptops like the Razer Blade. The keyboard features individually-lit keys that can switch between 16.8 million colors. Through the lighting system, a unique color can be assigned to each key to differentiate your most-used keys from the others or color-code them according to use. The system also lets you save different lighting assignments for different scenarios that fit your needs, whether it’s for gaming or using shortcut keys for creative applications.

The new Razer Blade packs more in a small device—more video memory, battery life, ports, and neat little features. It’s a definite improvement over its predecessor at a cheaper price. The laptop goes for $1999 for the 256GB solid-state drive and $2999 for double the amount of storage.

MSI GT62VR Dominator Pro-005

The MSI GT62VR Dominator Pro-005 is one of the first gaming laptops that feature Nvidia’s Pascal graphic technology, imbuing it with a stellar VR-ready performance with a lot of storage for a reasonable price of $1499. Its 2.6-GHz Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor with 32GB of RAM and PCIe solid-state drive (SSD) can take the heavy load of multiple processes and its Nvidia G-Sync display ensures a beautiful, smooth, gaming experience.

The Dominator Pro-005’s 15.6 inch 1920 x 1080p screen gets a boost from MSI’ True Color software, allowing users to adjust color temperature in six different ways (Gamer, Anti-Blue, sRGB, Designer, Office and Movie). For all its heavy duty capabilities, however, the unit only lasts for 3 hours and 18 minutes on a full charge with heavy use.

One of its neat features is how customizable its backlit keyboard is. The keyboard has a GameSense feature that maps keyboard zones to specific games. For example, the left side of your keyboard can light up green or red according to your health, while the other parts can light up according to your bullet inventory, mana, and other in-game parameters, flashing when a significant change occurs.

Overall, the Dominator Pro-005 dominates in terms of graphics performance, power, display, and speed. It’s kind of heavy because of the power requirement though.

Origin EON17-X

The 17-inch Origin EON17-X is basically a desktop in a laptop shell in the way that it performs, which is good news because it does so at a reasonable price ($1716). Its specs include an Intel Core i7-6700K with a base speed of 4.0-4.5GHz., an 8GB GeForce GTX 980M, 16GB memory, a 256GB solid-state drive, and a 1TB hard drive.

The Origin EON17-X has a full HD display at 1920 x 1080p resolution and Nvidia G-Sync, giving you a streamlined visual experience when it’s on. However, G-Sync takes a lot out of the hardware so in some cases, you’ll have to tweak the settings for a good compromise between performance and amazing visuals. Naturally, with a high-performing hardware, it takes a lot out of its battery life, as most laptops do.

It sports a responsive touchpad with smooth finger scrolling and a fingerprint scanner located between the left and right click buttons. The EON17-X combines sleek external design with powerful hardware (a desktop-level CPU and graphics card), even beating highly-rated competition. It’s also the perfect upgrade from its smaller sibling, the EON15-X, which is also a decent gaming laptop in its own right and a cheaper alternative.
