The Xiaomi Mi Mix Review

Xiaomi Mi Mix just took us into the future with its all-display facade, setting the bar for progressive smartphone design. Apart from maximizing every bit of space for its screen, what makes the Xiaomi Mi Mix one of the highly anticipated smartphones in the market? Let’s take a quick dive into the different aspects of the unit.

Display

Xiamo-Mi-Mix-3

The most noticeable feature in this smartphone is its 6.25-inch, 1080×2040-pixel, all-display front face with 362 pixels per inch. The edges of the phone are rounded so the screen extends all the way to the corners. Unlike other smartphones out there, the Xiaomi Mi Mix is bezel-less. This gives the unit more screen space than most smartphones. We can’t stress this enough because it’s amazing that someone finally did it.

The unit is also bigger than your standard smartphones, clocking in at 6.4 inches. This proves to be a problem, as the smoothness of the phone’s strong ceramic body and the all-screen surface combined with its size makes for a device that’s easy to slip from your fingers. It’s no surprise that the unit comes with a premium leather case for the purpose of counteracting this flaw.

Hardware and Essentials

What is a smartphone without a good camera? While the Xiaomi Mi Mix boasts of an all-screen display, its camera is not as spectacular as people expected. Focusing is slow and the pictures appear dark if you take them in low light. If you love taking pictures or selfies, there are better phones out there that take superior pictures. But if you want to see your pictures in an all-screen phone, you can get this for that novelty.

The Xiaomi Mi Mix also made another innovation with their approach to audio. The phone has what they call “cantilever piezoelectric ceramic acoustic technology,” which uses vibrations through the ceramic frame to generate sound. This phone is totally done with speakers, although it still has a 3.5 mm jack for your earphones/headphones. This new technology works okay with calls but isn’t as loud when you go on loudspeaker mode.

Performance

While some aspects of the phone are out of the box, the Xiaomi Mi Mix is just like any other smartphone on the inside. It’s powered by a Snapdragon 821 processor with 4GB or 6GB of RAM depending on the model you get. The unit also has 128GB of internal storage that is non-expandable (no SD card slot).

Despite some of the Mi Mix’s shortcomings like its camera, the Xiaomi Mi Mix makes up for it with its long-lasting battery. The unit can last an entire day even for heavy users with its 4400-mAh quick-charging battery.

Unfortunately, the Xiaomi Mi Mix is only available in select markets. Lucky for us, it’s available here.

Conclusion

While Xiaomi as a brand has been accused of being a copycat of other smartphone brands, Xiaomi has succeeded in making their own mark by taking a risk with the Xiaomi Mi Mix. This smartphone is both stunning and original in spite of its flaws. In the tech business, innovation, reliability, and vision are well-rewarded. The Xiaomi Mi Mix somehow fulfills two out of three, and only time will tell whether it will become a reliable phone or something that will need further improvement.

Overall

The Xiaomi Mi Mix is a pioneer in smartphone design, taking the obvious next step in an all-display phone after the Samsung Edge phones. It has some cool new features that are tied with its design but some features didn't do so well in testing like its camera. Its audio capability leaves much to be desired and this seems to be an effect of their innovative take on smartphone audio (ceramic acoustic technology). In spite of some its flaws, it performs reliably with its capable processors and long-lasting battery.
