UAE government wants to improve these services with Smart Dubai initiative

Over the past two decades, Dubai has been pushing its efforts to become one of the smartest cities in the world through the Smart Dubai project and thereby fueling economic changes in the UAE.

The Dubai government has been developing a series of innovative programs as far back as the ’90s, including the Dubai eGovernment in 1999. Just recently, the city’s government has put in place a series of smart initiatives since last year to promote a safe and efficient city experience.

The different aspects of the Smart Dubai project include partnerships that aim for Smart Economy, Smart Governance, Smart Environment, Smart Living, Smart People, and Smart Mobility. All these initiatives are designed to set up Dubai to become globally competitive, helping provide a better lifestyle and achieve higher standards of living for everyone.

Roadmap to a Smart City

The vision of making Dubai the smartest and happiest city in the world requires more than just hard work, what they’ll need is cooperation. The Smart Dubai initiative itself has several stakeholders serving as the backbone for the current state of smart city services. One of its main goals is to unify government entities and organizations from the private sector.

The Smart Dubai initiative follows a Roadmap, which includes all the current and future services and initiatives for the first phase of the project. The Roadmap includes the following objectives:

  • Identify current and planned services
  • Identify opportunities
  • Assess initiatives and services
  • Create a collaborative roadmap
  • Move forward the same goal with strategic partners

When asked about the target completion of the Smart Dubai initiative, Smart Dubai Office director general Dr. Aisha Bin Bishr said that the Roadmap covers every dimension to ensure Dubai will achieve its “smart” status across all sectors. He further adds that a city can never be fully smart unless they remain updated with all the latest technology.

Achievements with Current Initiatives

One of the smart initiatives they put in place since last year was Shams Dubai, a project that installed homes with rooftop solar power, smart meters, and other smart applications for smarter consumption of energy and water. The city is also pushing for the Green Charger or the use of electric charging stations for electric vehicles.

The launch of car-sharing is also another important initiative to make transportation for tourists and residents more seamless and efficient. The car-sharing initiative includes Carpool Arabia and RTA’s ride-sharing service, Sharekni.

Smart City Status

By the end of 2016, 85% of the Smart Dubai initiatives will be scheduled for launch. These will pave the way for the development of more future services from the continuous collaboration of the government and private sector.

Experts say that Dubai’s Smart City status is nearly there but of course, that still remains to be seen. Depending on the key performance indicators, it is likely that Dubai will achieve its vision of being the smartest city in the world soon.
