Year in Review: Top gaming stories of 2016

Almost everyone would agree that we would like to leave behind 2016 with all its depressing details and move on to the New Year. But 2016 is also a good year for gaming. Exciting new games and game console made their way into the hands of game enthusiasts and more than that, gaming technology ventured into new heights. Gaming will never be the same again.

Before the year ends, let’s have a quick rundown of the gaming industry’s highlights this 2016:

1. Sony PlayStation 4 Pro

Sony bags another successful year with the release of Sony PlayStation 4 Pro. Providing better graphics and performance than its predecessors, the PS4 Pro promised to take gaming experience to a new level–and it achieved just that.

The PS4 Pro is an improvement of the PS4, which makes it compatible with almost all existing PS games, accessories, and apps available. It also has improved bandwidth for Share Play and Remote Play.

2. Oculus Rift

Officially released last March, the Oculus Rift was the first of the virtual reality headset series introduced this year. The strongest suit of the Oculus Rift is its quality control – so far, those who’ve used this VR headset have yet to encounter a screen tear in the games they played. It’s a popular choice for those who want to review VR games as a great number of VR gaming reviews attest. Performance, while not super stellar, offers users with a smart introduction to what virtual reality gaming is all about.

3. Sony PlayStation VR

Sony isn’t done with its game tech releases. Just late this year, they released their own VR head-mounted display, the PlayStation VR. Initially dubbed as Project Morpheus, the PlayStation VR was Sony’s attempt to penetrate the realm of virtual reality gaming. The PlayStation VR introduces VR technology to one of the most popular gaming platforms in the world, serving as a stepping stone for the future of gaming.

4. Nintendo Switch

Rumors of the Nintendo Switch release and its details have been circulating all year round. Unveiled just last October, the Nintendo Switch (a.k.a. the NX) is a hybrid game console that switches between portable handheld console and traditional home console, and between single player and multiplayer gameplay.

The Nintendo Switch comes with a specialized gamepad that you can attach to its main body as a handheld console and detach it while you connect the main body to a dock for the home gaming console mode. It uses game cartridges that you can insert into the side of the console, similar to the gamecards of the Nintendo DS. There’s no exact date of its release yes, but the introduction of this console just made 2016 better and gave us hope for the next year. You can read more about the Nintendo Switch here.

5. New Game Releases. Big ones.

News of console releases have brought the gaming industry on edge, but the games that came out this year doubled the excitement. Early in the year, Niantic took gamers out to the streets with the release of Pokemon’s augmented reality game version, Pokémon Go. Meanwhile, Square Enix also took the spotlight this year with the release of the much-awaited installment in the Final Fantasy franchise, Final Fantasy XV. There’s also Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Battlefield 1, and Gears of War 4, just to name a few of the most anticipated games of the year.

Now, the year 2016 may not be a good year overall but at least we got some great distractions from the gaming world!
